Back to the roots

Even a broken leg and a big traffic jam could not prevent me from attending my first Apocalyptica concert in Graz in 2005. At this time I was learning to play cello already for eight years and I was absolutely amazed about how these Finns used their celli for rock music. Being classical trained, but with a rock n roll heart made me see the huge range and the possibilities of this wonderful instrument for the first time. This was the night I realized that I picked the right instrument for me. One of the most touching songs of this show was “Nothing else matters”, because an atmospheric harmony of the band and the audience – who passionately took over the vocal part – came up.

Exactly 12 years (to the day!) and many attended concerts later the band finally returned to Graz with their “20 years of Plays Metallica by four Cellos” tour. This time the guys were playing at the Kasemattenbühne on the Schlossberg which was a great location for this exclusive evening. For me it felt like a giant flashback, because Apocalyptica only played Metallica songs and even Antero Manninen was back on stage. Nothing changed during these years; I am still fascinated by their talented and inspiring cello playing, their down to earth attitude after this huge success all over the world as well as their visible passion for this special instrument. Apocalyptica still make me want to play cello and jump on the stage again. Yes, it couldn’t be much more from the heart, because nothing else matters.
